Invest in Profit (but call it something else)
I often see Investment company adverts saying they base their efforts on various things, none of which seem to be what they really do.
One of which is ‘research’. It’s a stretch to call that kind of financial business research. On one level it sort of is, in that they are searching for information about markets, policies, opportunities etc. But the aim is to make money, profit for investors. Research, actual research, is about searching for information, exploring, experimenting, for the sake of understanding - not for the sake of profit. There is a fundamental difference there.
They also talk about ‘meeting the needs’ of their customers. What are those needs? - to make more money. Why hide that? Why the language of needs as if it was something like the need for health care or a nice house to live in? Why not say directly ‘it helps us make more money for our investors’?
They also talk of ‘innovating’ - and distort and hijack another admirable word. What innovation is involved? It seems to be two main types: ways of making more money for their customers and ways of evading the rules of tax and regulations of the countries they operate in. Can we dignify that with the word innovation?
One of those company’s says: ‘Our mission is simple: connecting a world of expertise with your needs in mind’. I won’t name the company here and it hardly matters, because they all have such crap as their pretend aim. Why not be honest? Your aim is indeed simple: to make more profit for your investors. What aspect of that are you ashamed of that you need to hide it behind the fancy words?
If say to them, for example, ‘OK. let me take you at your word. One of my needs is to have free education which is still high quality, for my child.’ What experts can they connect me to for that important need? Wont it very quickly become a question of:
‘Ah, there is very little profit to be made in free school education, we don’t have any interest in that, sorry’.
‘Oh, i see - so you mean you can help me meet me needs only if you can make profit from it?’
‘Ah..yes. That's what we mean.’
‘Oh, now i understand. So your basic aim is to make profit. Not to meet needs for the sake of the benefit they bring in themselves?’
‘Ah, well, yes.’
Why not say that then?
