Chill out man!
Here is a silly thing, common among British and Americans especially. If you think or speak in even a moderately ‘deep’ way about something, then some eejit is bound to say something like this:
“Chill out man…. don’t take it so seriously… relax, mate!… alright, calm down…”
What a stupid habit that is.
There is nothing ‘un-chill’ about thinking deeply about a subject you care about. Quite the opposite, it’s cool, healthy, stylish and productive. Most of the positive useful stuff we have in our lives in the product of someone, somewhere, having had a good think about it. Elevators, TV, the internet, golf carts, glasses… the medical procedures that help us get over disease… the plumbing system….international phone calls…and of course, music, literature, movies, comics.
How much of that would we have if everyone just switched to ‘zombie chill out mode’ the moment they spent more than 30 seconds talking and thinking about something?
What this daft ‘relax, dont take it so seriously’ tendency really means is: be shallow, be boring…don’t do anything unusual or interesting or complicated… just fit in, conform, obey.
Though, as it goes, you ARE allowed to talk at great length and mind numbing detail about some stuff, but it has to be: cars, sport, big movies, food…and, ah, well just those actually. Its a bit limited.
For anyone who says ““Chill out man…. don’t take it so seriously… relax, mate!… alright, calm down…” in reply to something interesting and intelligent, I have this chilled, relaxed, laid back request:
Fuck off back to eejit island and relax yourself into a stupor.
Nice and smooth…
